Kezia,
Encourage what kind of behavior? You should be grateful Obama the father left, or we would never have had a black president in the U.S. Can you imagine if his father had raised him? What African father would have let his son -- with a degree from Harvard -- got back to Chicago to do community service, which the president credits for his success?

It is very easy -- and I dare say lazy -- to judge people we knew very little about. And a guy who is dead and can't defend himself? Obama's father had flaws, just like we all do. Events out of our control force us to act in unimaginable ways, and anyone who says they would have handled the situation differently is a damn phony.

President Obama's mother never said a bad word about the man who abandoned her, although she endured the pain of raising a child. So who are we to call this guy a deadbeat dad? These kind of emotionally charged condemnations of Obama's father often come from people who have suffered similar issues. Rather than try to judge people we never met, I suggest we look at ourselves and try to break the cycle of dysfunction in our own families. It requires a strong mind.

A salute to President's Barack Obama father. For what? Abandoning his child through unexplainable excuses? For leaving a woman to take his responsibility as a man? Why do we encourage this kind of behavior under the disguise of traditions? To me,the best response would be, "Shame on him and all the dead-beat fathers walking around."

Bwana Okong'o,

Can't stop to wonder who among us does not fall in so part of this. For me, I have been through all of the stages and more. My prayer is that "Obama Ran so our children can Fly." Kudos, Mzee.

Okong'o,
This is the funniest ever. I just started dating a Nigerian man and boy would he love this piece! We love to joke about this topic. He told me that in Africa I would be considered a family wife, so -- being an African-American woman -- I asked him: "Do I get a family husband?"

Edwin,

This is funnier than shit! Bitter-sweet in a way. Which one is more bitter for an immigrant: Assimilation or the View?
